Chennai Corporation authorities seized two tonnes of rotten beef from a meat supplier in Chintadripet on Thursday as part of a series of raids to curb the inflow and sale of rotten meat in the city just on the heels of another raid earlier this month, in which several tonnes of rotten beef and mutton were seized from trains coming in from Andhra Pradesh and Rajasthan.
Officials said that the beef was brought in mini-vans from Naidupet in thermocole boxes, sandwiched by layers of ice. “The meat was extremely rotten and there was a bad smell emanating from it. It should be at least 10 days old,” said an official.
Officials added that the shop, which allegedly supplies meat to some of the top hotels in the city, had a licence, which had expired in 2011. The licence had not been renewed this year. “The owner claimed that they had a licence but they were unable to produce it. They had already been pulled up for the same reason around seven years ago,” said an official, who also added that the shop had been sealed and its licence would be cancelled if and when it is produced.
Sources hinted that the next set of raids were aimed at suppliers in and around Kodambakkam and Vysarpadi areas. “We have to co-ordinate with officers from other zones to do this. Once we get hold of the receipt books from them, we will be able to know which hotels buy meat from them,” sources said. Officials added that shop in Chintadripet did not have receipts for the sales and the owner had refused to give information about his customers.
