ERODE: Hundreds of farmers in the district, who cultivated turmeric in their lands driven by the high price of the crop two years ago, are in a desperate situation. The crop was grown in 14,000 hectares in the district alone. Owing to the huge supply that resulted, the traders decided to reduce the prices of turmeric. They also expressed their anguish over the steep fall in prices, which have plummeted from the 17,500 per quintal last December, to the current Rs 4,500. Thamizhaga Vivasyigal Sangam district secretary PC Sengottiyan urged the Centre to fix floor price on the basis of the recommendations of the M S Swaminathan panel.
