Chennai: Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Tuesday announced that 19,620 new police personnel would be recruited in the next four years, to be posted in the 1,498 police stations functioning in Tamil Nadu.
Replying to the discussion on the demands for grants for the police department, the CM said that by filling the vacancies created due to retirement of personnel, a total of 30,000 personnel (including the 19,620 new personnel) will be recruited through the TN Uniformed Services Recruitment Board.
Stating that at present, there were 1,12,363 posts in the State Police Department, the CM said there was a need to increase the number of police personnel in proportion to the corresponding increase in the population and to ensure efficient functioning of the police force.
The CM said at present, police training schools were functioning only in eight places and only 3,000 personnel could be trained per year. In contrast, there was a need for training at least 15,000 personnel per year. To fulfil the needs of banks and other organisations, a Tamil Nadu Industrial Security Force would be formed, she added.
With a view to gathering vital information from villages, the Intelligence network would be strengthened at a cost of Rs 10 crore. A cyber lab would be formed at a cost of Rs 60.55 lakh as some criminals shared information about their activities through the Internet, she added.
