New Delhi: The World Cup is here and all of India is glued to their television sets post-7 PM, cheering on Team India and waiting for it to get the coveted cup back to India after 24 years.
But there is one section of society that is extremely unhappy with the timing of the World Cup - the student community, which is busy with annual exams.
"The exams have spoiled the cricket fun. It has been a total mismatch. If the exams were conducted earlier, we could have at least enjoyed the later stages of the Cup namely super eight onwards," a third year Economic (Hons) student Shashank Nair was quoted by news agency PTI as saying.
School students are still a relieved lot, as their board exams are slated to finish on April 5 -- much before the World Cup finals.
"My maths paper is on March 22 and the next is only on April 4 meaning which I would have ample of time to catch up with cricket. Moreover, the real World Cup would start only after April," class XII student, Varun was quoted by PTI as saying.
However, college students are upset and their parents are a worried lot for they feel that children are distracted because of the ongoing matches and tend to lose their concentration especially on the days that Team India is playing, leading to low marks.
So, it seems, the college students are left in lurch as the university exams are scheduled to start only in April and that too when the Cup fever would be at its peak.
"I am more interested in watching the cricket match. Moreover, the matches take place only in the evening and one has the entire day to study. How can I compromise on cricket," a Delhi University student Summit Rajora, told PTI.
Though psychologists say that cricket viewing makes for a refreshing change in break times, parents are still worried as students crank on that radio to listen to commentary even as they study.
Exams or no exams, cricket takes precedence over all, and parents feel that perhaps colleges would do well to postpone exams during World Cup days.
