Terror plot for Goa 'real', alert likely
The Centre may issue a New Year terror alert for the beach country after a verification of the threat perception.

New Delhi: After initially putting up a brave front on the face of a terror alert for Goa emanating from Israel, New Delhi is doing a followup on the tip-off and it is possible that the Centre may issue a New Year terror alert for the beach country after a proper verification of the threat perception.

According to Home Ministry sources, the Centre has sent a directive to the Indian missions in Yemen, Algeria and Saudi Arabia to do a follow-up check on the intelligence inputs from Israel. Israel had issued a travel advisory to its citizens earlier this month, telling them to keep away from Goa during the holiday season.

Union Home Ministry sources now say the terror threat to Goa could indeed be very real and the government doesn’t want to take any chances on this.

According to sources, the Centre was alarmed about the situation after Indian missions in West Asia and North Africa reported that the intelligence inputs warning of a terror strike in Goa tallied with information obtained from interrogation of members of Islamic militant groups arrested in these regions.

New Delhi is now planning to issue directions to the Goa government seeking all steps to keep the tourist destination secure during festivities leading up to the New Year’s Day.

The first inputs about a terror plot came from Jeddah based on information after the arrest of Yemenese and Algerian militants.

It showed that militant groups had done a recce of popular spots in Goa. A laptop with them had detailed plans of a possible militant strike, intelligence sources said.
