HYDERABAD: The two-day flash strike by the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) employees and workers was called off on Thursday afternoon after GHMC Commissioner M T Krishna Babu assured the striking staff that incidents like the one that took place on Tuesday wouldn’t be repeated.Police had on Tuesday arrested a few GHMC Telangana joint action committee leaders (TJAC) for allegedly forcing employees to boycott work. The breakthrough came after protracted talks between the commissioner and the TJAC leaders.As per the agreement between the two sides, the GHMC will press for more workers and hire additional vehicles for transporting dumped garbage to the main dumping yard at Jawaharnagar on the city outskirts. Speaking to Express, Commissioner Krishna Babu said it was decided not to precipitate the matter further or let egos come in the way of settling contentious issues. “Whatever grievances the union leaders have, particularly regarding police misbehaviour at the GHMC head-office, they can submit a representation and the same would be submitted to the State Government and police officials for action,” he said. GHMC additional commissioner (health and sanitation) Aleem Basha said garbage vehicles big and small will be used round-the-clock to clear the piled up garbage from 4,000 dustbins in 48 hours by pressing additional manpower into service. “Private vehicles will also be hired to transport the garbage from garbage transfer stations located near the Imblibun bus station, Lower Tank Bund road and Yousufguda,” he added.On their part, the union leaders said the strike was called off keeping in mind the interests of the city and its citizens. “The works will be resumed immediately,” said Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh additional general secretary Vinay Kapoor.
