BHUBANESWAR: There is finally some good news for the girl students of Utkal University with the authorities deciding to make the Ladies Hostel no. VI operational very soon. Keeping in view the increasing number of applications by girls, university authorities had decided to set up another hostel on the premises a few years back. However, with the construction work being delayed, students had staged agitations several times in the past. Last month, students had stormed the P G Council Chairman’s office demanding better facilities in the hostels and opening of the Ladies Hostel no. VI. Though there are surplus seats in the boys’ hostels, one of them could not be vacated and allotted to the girls as the hostels for girls and boys are located in separate areas. The authorities have now completed construction work of the hostel building and decided to begin allotment process after procurement of furniture. “The construction of 120-bed hostel called Ladies Hostel no. VI is complete and the furnishing would be done soon and allotment made from this year onwards,” said P K Sarkar, Chairman of the University’s PG council. Funds for the purpose have been sanctioned by the UGC. With this, 1,026 seats are available in ladies’ hostels. Girls comprise 70 per cent of the total student strength. “It is difficult to ensure accommodation for every girl applying for hostel facility. The rooms are generally single or double-seaters. But sometimes, the boarders have to join two cots to accommodate a third student,” Sarkar said, adding the new hostel would be a relief for them. The University officials have also approached the UGC for more funds to make the new hostel a three-storey one to accommodate additional 300 girl students.
