New Delhi: Christmas saw the Taj Mahal creating a new record on Sunday, by drawing close to 16,000 visitors as against its daily average of 5,000-6,000 footfalls. Previously, the highest number of visitors in a day was 11,000 visitors, recorded on the Christmas last year.

There were over 15,000 visitors to the 17th century Moghul monument on Sunday, which itself was a record. On Monday, the number went up even further to create a new record.

The yearend and the first week of the New Year usually witness a spurt in the number of visitors to the Taj as the tourist season picks. But this year's rush has already been unprecedented at the very beginning of the holiday season.

The administration has deputed more security personnel at the Taj till January 5 in order to maintain law and order and ensure safety and security of the tourists. Security personnel are already having a tough time frisking the visitors, while tourists too have been facing a lot of inconvenience due to long queues at the entry points.

The holiday season generally witnesses a large number of foreign tourist arrivals in Agra.

Conservationists here have, meanwhile, expressed concern over the increasing number of visitors that could affect the fragile white marble monument. The Supreme Court too is seized of the matter and is likely to issue fresh directives on tourist flow management plans submitted by Uttar Pradesh government agencies.
