Former Haryana police officer convicted of molestation.

Chandigarh: The Punjab and Haryana High Court on Wednesday adjourned till Friday former Haryana police officer S P S Rathore’s bail plea in the Ruchika Girhotra molestation case.

Rathore, 68, will effectively spend at least another two nights in Burail jail where he has been lodged since last evening.

Rathore had filed a review petition before the High Court and sought bail on medical grounds through his lawyer and wife Abha Rathore on Wednesday, a day after a sessions court rejected his appeal challenging his conviction in the case and enhanced his jail term to 18 months from six months.

The petition was filed in the court of Justice S S Saron.

Justice Gurdev Singh, while taking up the bail plea, adjourned the matter for May 28 while also issuing a notice to the CBI.

In her petition, Abha Rathore had alleged that the appellate court had yesterday passed the order "under media pressure".

When the petition came up in the court of Justice Singh in the afternoon, Abha Rathore pleaded that the matter be taken up by the Court tomorrow but the Judge posted it for Friday.

She pleaded that her husband suffered from "severe health problems" but the Judge asked her to move a separate application for this.

The fate of Rathore's bail plea will depend on the decision of the High Court to take up the matter early. The Court closes for summer vacation from May 29 for one month

Rathore was jailed after a sessions court enhanced his prison term to 18 months for molesting 14-year-old teenager Ruchika Girhotra in 1990. Ruchika, a budding tennis player, committed suicide three years later by

consuming poison.
