New Delhi: In a show of strength aimed at reviving the plummeting fortunes of his party, Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi undertook a roadshow in Delhi's Kalkaji Assembly constituency on Thursday.
The roadshow began from the Kalkaji Transit Camp and went around the constituency as Rahul launched into full fledged campaign for Delhi Assembly elections on February 7.
Over 5,000 people attended the event shouting slogans 'Jaat pe na paat pe, mauhar lagegi haath pe'(No vote in the name of religion, caste, but only for Congress) and holding banners of Congress President Sonia Gandhi, Rahul and other senior leaders. Cutting across the age group, children, school students, housewives, businessman, old men and women attended the event with full enthusiasm.
Slamming Prime Minister Narendra Modi for not doing enough for the poor and favouring a selected few, Rahul said, "NDA government is at Centre and PM is busy in doing PR of himself. Work is being done for only three or four industrialists. Nothing is being done for the poor."
Accompanying Rahul in an open-mini truck was Delhi Election Campaign Committee chief Ajay Maken, Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee chief Arvinder Singh Lovely, Kalkaji constituency candidate Subhash Chopra and a few other leaders.
Kalkaji seat which was the stronghold of Congress saw Shiromani Akali Dal making inroads in the 2013 polls. SAD leader Harmeet Singh Kalka contesting on the Bharatiya Janata Party symbol won from Kalkaji in 2013.
The rally started around 3:30 PM as Rahul arrived late at the venue and lasted a little over an hour. Congress workers and supporters started cheering the moment Rahul came and waved at them.
Chopra who was with Rahul during the roadshow said, "Whatever the Prime Minister promised to do for the people, we started the mission six years ago. Rahul Gandhi is here to tell people that the Congress is with them and will be with them."
Claiming to have carried out several development projects for the constituency, he said, "I solved the road, water problem for the people. In the last 10 months, no work has been done. He (Harmeet Singh Kalka) did not spend any money from his MLA fund."
The Congress gave outside support to Aam Aadmi Party to form government in the national capital after the 2013 elections , but Chopra ruled out any such support this time. "We are coming back to power. AAP is the other side of the BJP coin. We can support any party but not AAP or BJP," he added.
Congress has witnessed a massive downfall since December 2013 polls and experienced its worst ever performance in Lok Sabha elections as it managed to win only 44 seats.
After ruling Delhi for 15 years, the Congress won only 8 seats in the 2013 elections. The Aam Aadmi Party stole the show by winning 28 seats and BJP-SAD won 32 seats.
