Students' group spoils event to honour the industrialist, shout slogans against him.

Mumbai: A group of pro-quota activists on Saturday heckled industrialist Rahul Bajaj during a function to felicitate him for his comments against reservations.

The activists, who belonged to a students’ organisation called Chhatra Bharati, shouted slogans and jostled with the audience as the function began at an auditorium in Central Mumbai.

"I didn't speak against reservation. I spoke on behalf of poor people. Whatever you want to ask, ask after June 15," Bajaj said.

The protestors were evicted from the venue by volunteers before they could make their way to the stage and were handed over to police.

"What is the use of reservations? We need to do more important things for India right now. India needs to progress. Where is the country right now?” said Bajaj, speaking to reporters.

"India's per capita income is $600. The figure for America and Europe is much more. It's not enough to deliver speeches or to just get votes," he added.

The function, which coincided with Bajaj's 68th birthday, was organised by the Marathwada Lokvikas Manch, a group representing people from the Marathwada region where the Bajaj Group has one of its biggest two-wheeler plants.

On May 9, industrialist Ratan Tata was heckled by pro-quota activists while he was accepting the Maharashtra Government's highest award at a function.
