Provide exact details of roadside statues, temples, flagposts: Madras HC
The bench stated this while hearing a PIL filed by one KK Ramesh, Managing Trustee of Tamil Nadu Centre for PIL.

Madurai: The Madras High Court bench on Thursday directed a PIL petitioner to provide exact details on roadside statues, temples and flagposts which disturbed free traffic flow and caused accidents so it could pass appropriate orders.

"Affidavits should not be of general nature, it should contain specific information and details about the statues that affected the flow of traffic on the highway or in the cities", Justices S Tamilvanan and VS Ravi said.

The bench stated this while hearing a PIL filed by one KK Ramesh, Managing Trustee of Tamil Nadu Centre for PIL. The petitioner submitted that there are 3.13 lakh party flagposts all over the state, causing traffic congestion. Besides 16,612 statues and 6311 wayside places of worship constructed without permission were also causing hindrance.

He said a three-judge bench had already directed officials to remove all encroachments in the state. However, they had not given effect to many of its orders. In fact, the court had even ordered on August 25 that stern action be taken against those who disobeyed its order, he said.

The petitioner urged the court to appoint an ad-hoc committee, headed by an eminent judicial officer, to monitor and advice the officials to detect the statues and roadside places of worship, which should be removed.

He also prayed for a direction to District Collectors and local body authorites to remove all illegal statues and places of worship so that road users are fully benefitted.
