Protest brewing over Meenachil project

KOCHI: Protest is brewing over the government’s decision to revive Meenachil river project which may lead to decrease in the water level in Muvattupuzha river. Jaladhara Jalasaksharatha Mission, a Kochi-based NGO which met on Monday protested against the decision.The main crop in the Meenachil basin is rubber which requires only a little water. But the state government has envisaged it as an irrigation project. The project also violates the norms for using water, said C A Vijayachandran, executive director, Jala Saksharatha Mission.  The guidelines by the Union Government for inter-basin water transfer have also been violated, he said.
