Chandigarh: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will inaugurate a housing complex at Dhanas on September 14, benefiting nearly 8,500 families living in slums in the city.

The Rs 2,400 crore worth 'Housing Complex' project at Dhanas town has been completed and the Prime Minister will hand over the keys of 8,448 houses, of 267 square feet each, to the slum families, Chandigarh's Home Secretary Anil Kumar said here Wednesday.

As per an official survey, there are around 25,000 families that have been identified as living in slums in various places in the city, he said.

"The idea of the project is to make Chandigarh slum-free," Kumar said, adding that another project would come up in the next two years at another place in the city.

These houses will be handed over to the beneficiaries on lease for a period of 20 years, after the completion of the time period the house will be allotted to them, he said.

Tight security arrangements have been made ahead of the Prime Minister's visit.

"At the complex entire social infrastructure has been arranged," Kumar said, adding that the complex would have Sewerage Treatment Plant (STP), electricity, drinking water supply, school, police station, dispensary among other things.

The house, measuring 267 square feet will have a living room, a bathroom and kitchen.

The Union Territory of Chandigarh had received a total of Rs 10,026 crore funds from the Centre for providing facilities to those living in slums in the city, he said.
