New Delhi: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Friday asked the Karnataka government to take “serious steps” to curb terrorist activities in the state and strengthen intelligence network.
The PM’s instruction comes after brothers and Bangalore residents Kafeel and Sabeel Ahmed were detained in Britain in connection with two bomb-laden cars found in London on June 29 and an attack on a Glasgow airport the next day.
Kafeel, who is being treated in Glasgow for severe burns, allegedly drove a bomb-laden Jeep Cherokee into the airport. Mohammed Haneef, a cousin of the brothers and another Bangalore resident, is being held in Australia in connection with the terror plot.
Singh and Kumaraswamy discussed the security situation in the state. “The Prime Minister has asked me to take serious steps to curb terrorism and strengthen the intelligence network,” Kumaraswamy told PTI after a 30-minute meeting with Singh.
Singh "expressed concern" over the "developments in the past few days" and wanted necessary steps to be taken to maintain security in the state.
Kumaraswamy said no Australian official was visiting Bangalore to probe Haneef’s background. Kumaraswamy, before meeting the PM, briefed Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil about the developments in the state and the preventive measures taken by the state police and the Home department.
"I have briefed the Home Minister on developments in the state over the past 10 days. We have to take serious action and the state's intelligence and Home Department are capable of handling the situation," he said.
Australian police on Friday resumed interrogating Haneef after dropping a request to extend his 11-day detention without charge. A massive investigation has established links between Muhammad Haneef and at least two of the British suspects, but has not uncovered enough evidence to charge him, according to official documents cited by The Australian newspaper Friday.
