BANGALORE: Illegal encroachment whether on public or private property is always a matter of concern for those involved in the situation, be it a single individual or a government body.Dealing with such hurdles is never an easy task.The Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike too has had its own fair share of such hassles.One can site many examples of illegal encroachment on such government properties, from small time local vendors to slums to large builders.The Bangalore Task Force (BMTF) was created in the mid nineties to deal and tackle such problems.According to Mallik Arjun Swami, superintendent of police, the BMTF’s agenda encompasses various government bodies like the Bangalore Development Authority, Slum clearance board, housing board and many more apart from the property belonging to the Palike.“Our local engineers collect the data regarding encroachment, after all the procedures are done, we take the help of the local police to clear the spot of encroachment,” he informed.When questioned about the other activities of the BMTF, Swami said that while clearing illegal occupancy of real estate was the main agenda, the task force units also participate in emergencies.“In case of a flood or a natural calamity the unit is split and sent to the zones where they are required,” he informed.The BMTF has been responsible for many of the illegal encroachments that the Palike had removed in the past few months.‘‘Whenever the Palike goes on such drives, BMTF’s support is of utmost importance.Since 2007, we have successfully removed over 500 such encroachment cases.There are approximately another 350 to 400 cases that are still pending.Some of these cases are in the high court.While some have been resolved, we are still waiting for a judgement on the others,’’ said a BBMP official.
