Mumbai opener Prithvi Shaw has hit the headlines again for non-cricketing reasons. He’s been dropped from Mumbai’s squad for their next Ranji Trophy fixture with a report claiming it’s because of fitness and disciplinary issues. The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) hasn’t officially revealed any reason behind their decision to replace Shaw with Akhil Herwadkar.
“The Senior Selection Committee of Mumbai Cricket Association consisting of Sanjay Patil (Chairman), Ravi Thaker, Jeetendra Thackeray, Kiran Powar, and Vikrant Yeligeti has selected the following players to represent Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy match against Tripura to be played from 26th to 29th October 2024 at MBB Stadium, Agartala,” MCA said in a statement.
A report in Cricbuzz claims that the decision has been made to give Shaw a warning who is considered overweight and not a regular in the practice sessions.
Before the reports of him being snubbed emerged, Shaw did share a message via Instagram. “Need a break thx,” wrote the 24-year-old who was the captain when India won the 2018 U-19 World Cup.
The report further claimed that it was a unanimous decision to drop Shaw from the squad.
The highly rated Shaw was projected as the next big thing in Indian cricket given his exploits in domestic cricket. He did back the hype with a record century on Test debut in 2018 raising hopes of a bright career. However, since then, he has managed to play in just five Tests, six ODIs and one T20I with his last international match coming in July 2021.
Shaw’s Ranji Trophy season hasn’t started well either having scored 7, 12, 1 and 39* in his first four innings.
Mumbai squad: Ajinkya Rahane (captain), Ayush Mhatre, Angkrish Raghuvanshi, Akhil Herwadkar, Shreyas Iyer, Siddhessh Lad, Suryansh Shedge, Hardik Tamore (wk), Sidhaant Addhatrao (wk), Shams Mulani, Karsh Kothari, Himanshu Singh, Shardul Thakur, Mohit Avasthi, Mohd. Juned Khan and Royston Dias.
