Kochi: The Kerala High Court on Saturday granted conditional bail to an accused in the professor's hand-chopping case, allegedly by suspected activists of the radical Popular Front of India in Kerala.
The Additional Sessions court Judge, Ernakulam, V Shircy, granted bail to Anas, the 47th accused, on a bond of Rs 1 lakh and two solvent sureties for the same amount.
Anas has been asked to appear before the investigating officers every Saturday and Monday and surrender his passport within five days of his release, the prosecution said.
The accused was elected from the Vazhakulam panchayat during the recent civic polls, defeating both the Congress-led UDF and CPI(M)-led LDF candidates.
He contested the polls as candidate of Socialist Democratic Party, a political arm of the Popular Front of India.
TJ Joseph, lecturer at the Thodupuzha Newman college, was attacked in July this year for preparing a question paper, which allegedly had some derogatory references to Prophet Mohammed.
