NSS forsakes creamy layer for sake of Hindu League

Making a stratagem move to consolidate its position like in a game of chess, the Nair Service Society (NSS) has withdrawn the writ petition filed in the Supreme Court against hiking the creamy layer cap.

Although, the move will push them one step ahead for the expected greater alliance of majority communities, it could be a back-pedalling for the NSS as far as its proclaimed stance on reservation issues is concerned.

According to NSS general secretary G Sukumaran Nair, the NSS has taken this decision to decimate the chasm between the reservation and non-reservation sections in the majority communities, so that it would pave a hassle- free way for a greater alliance and the proposed Hindu League.

“Earlier, the NSS had decided to oppose raising the creamy layer cap, as we were on a stringent stance regarding reservation. However, we admit the changes in time and decided to give up the dispute on the creamy layer. Let the deserved people have their benefits, which we never oppose,” Sukumaran Nair said.

“When the NSS and other majority communities have reached a point of reconciliation we would not oppose them in claiming their benefits. Besides, the S R Sinhu National Commission for the Forward Communities had submitted its recommendations for the creation of a new category of Economically Backward Communities so that the benefit of reservation could be extended to the economically backward sections among the forward communities. The social atmosphere will have a tremendous change once its recommendations are implemented. Since the report is under the consideration of the Central Government, we will wait for its implementation soon,” he said.

However, he said although the NSS has not got any assurance from the government, the track record of the Central Government has been always favourable regarding the reservation issues.

Sukumaran Nair also pointed out that its decision to withdraw the plea in the Supreme Court is a compromise for the alliance from its part.
