TIRUCHY: Kajamalai S Vijai, the DMK Milaguparai branch secretary and a close aide of former minister K N Nehru, was arrested on charges of land grab here on Monday.Vijai, who was absconding, surrendered at the K K Nagar police station.According to sources, Kaliamurthy (72), who runs an STD booth in Kajamalai, had lodged a complaint against Vijai, alleging that he had usurped his 40,000-sq ft land in Kajamalai.Several cases of assault are pending against Vijai. These include attacks on Baba Bakrudeen, a Tamil Nadu Muslim Munnetra Kazhagam (TMMK) functionary at the airport, A Manivannan of Cantonment and R Subburam of Crawford.Vijai began his political career as a member of the DMK’s student wing in 2001 and was a sympathiser of Rajya Sabha MP Tiruchy N Siva. In 2004, he, however, had a showdown with Siva, as he was not given a seat for the local body election.Subsequently, he joined the camp of K N Nehru and has been his trusted lieutenant since then.Known for his notoriety in attacking and threatening policemen, Vijai was in the news after he was chased through the city’s streets by armed reserve police personnel after picking up a quarrel in a bar in 2006.Due to his political clout and proximity to Nehru, Vijai used to park his vehicle in the middle of the road and threaten the policemen, if questioned.Basically a contractor, Vijai’s strength was always visible in the allotment of government contracts.In 2010, he had attacked one of the contractors inside the Corporation after the latter challenged him in bidding for the contract.Once, he had caught hold of the uniform of an Assistant Commissioner of Police for asking him to clear the way for a minister.
