The mortal remains of Congress leader and former Labour Minister N Ramakrishnan were consigned to flames as hundreds of Congress workers looked on at Payyambalam here on Wednesday.
People from various walks of life had turned up at Payyambalam to pay their last respects to the departed Congress leader.
Earlier, the body of N Ramakrishnan was placed at the District Congress Committee office and the premises of the Municipal Town Hall for the public to pay homage.
The body of N Ramakrishnan was placed at his house at Talap on Tuesday after it was brought from the Mangalore hospital where he died on Monday afternoon.
Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Mullappally Ramachandran, Union Minister of State for Power K C Venugopal, KPCC president Ramesh Chennithala, Rural Development Minister K C Joseph, K K Narayanan MLA, A P Abdullakutty MLA and several Congress leaders including Benny Behanan, M M Hassan and K P Nuruddeen attended the funeral.
The District Congress Committee here had issued a call for hartal as a mark of respect to the departed Congress leader on Wednesday.
Normal life in the district here came to a standstill as a result of the hartal organised by the traders. Shops and commercial establishments remained closed. Hotels, restaurants and medical shops at the district headquarters also downed their shutters supporting the hartal.
