New Delhi: After weeks of flip-flopping and speculation on will he, won't he, Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf finally announced his resignation as the head of the state in a national televised address.
Pervez Musharraf came to power on October 12 1999, when he went from being the chief of Pakistan's army to the chief of its government in a bloodless coup, toppling democracy on the way.
Less than two years later, on June 20, 2001, he formally appointed himself President of Pakistan.
Pakistan's ruling coalition - which decided to impeach him for alleged misconduct, violation of the Constitution and financial irregularities - welcomed the decision on Monday, with PML-N leader, Nawaz Sharif saying that the resignation was a "victory for the people of Pakistan".
"Today they (the people of Pakistan) are free from dictatorial regime. We can say a dark period of their life has ended," he said.
Nawaz added, "Now, the democratic government of Pakistan will have to perform and prove to the people that it is capable. It will have to fulfill each and every individual's aspiration."
He also thanked all the people of the world as well as the media for "supporting democracy".
