MADURAI/CHENNAI: A Madurai court on Monday granted permission to the police to take Union Minister M K Alagiri’s aide ‘Essar’ Gopi into custody for one day in connection with a 2-year-old murder case. Hearing a petition by police, Judicial Magistrate 1, Sujatha, allowed the investigators to take him for questioning on Tuesday. Gopi had surrendered in court on July 29 in connection with a land grabbing case and was lodged in Tiruchy prison.On July 30, the rural police slapped a murder case on him after re-investigating an accident case. Gopi and his aides allegedly killed 32-year-old Pandiarajan and made it appear like a routine road accident case using political clout. Pandiarajan’s body was found in a link road leading to Periyar Nagar near Eechanodai. Madurai Superintendent of Police Asra Garg said Gopi and his associates abducted Pandiarajan on April 15, 2009, while his wife and parents looked on. Later, Pandiarajan was taken to a farmhouse on the city outskirts and reportedly beaten up.
