CHENNAI: Success in life is not merely vying to attain the top position in a particular field, but attempting to better every time you make an effort. This was the message from Tamil Nadu’s Additional Chief Secretary and Higher Education Secretary TS Sridhar to the students of MOP Vaishnav College for Women, at the 20th College Day function.Sridhar urged the students to keep in mind the need to work towards alleviation of poverty in the country. “We need to remember that we have all been fortunate. God has been kind to us,” he told the large gathering of students and parents. “We have been able to achieve many things that a lot of people in our country are unable to do. Education alone, for its own sake, maybe useful. But we must get educated to gain employment and also create employment,” he said.Sridhar also underlined the strides made in the field of women’s education. “Women’s education has grown in the past decade. In BEd and MEd courses, women heavily outnumber the men. In fields like engineering, the men outnumber women but for traditional reasons. This proves that women can achieve in the presence of opportunity,” he said.Speaking at the function, Nirmala Prasad, principal of MOP Vaishnav College, outlined the mission and vision of the institution, and recalled the various milestones in the two decades of the college’s existence. She also presented an annual report on the achievements of students and the faculty in the past year in academics, sports, extracurricular and NCC, apart from research of faculty members.TS Sridhar's wife Harini Sridhar, a soft skills trainer, and Harikrishna Jhaver, executive member of the college, were among other dignitaries who took part in the function.
