BNAGALORE:  If all goes well with the budgetary allocation, the state department plans to roll out a new scheme for protection and development of endangered plant species having medicinal value.
With increase in the population, many plants are heading towards extinction. The proposal which aims to protect endangered medicinal and aromatic plants facing extinction is currently with the finance department and is waiting for sufficient budget allocation for the effective implementation across the state."There has been an increase in demand for medicinal plants for traditional medicine. It has been difficult to meet the ever growing demand, this new scheme will help protecting endangered medicinal plants facing extinction", Prabhas Chandra Ray, conservator of forest (development) said.

Nearly 800 hectares of land has been identified for the various works like survey, identification of species, involving local communities for protection monitoring and regeneration studies. In order to develop exsitu conservation strategies, nearly 1250 hectares in 50 different locations has been identified and fencing of these location with barbed wires and stone pillars or RCC pillars will be done as per the proposal.

In order to inculcate awareness among students, the department is set to introduce reward scheme for students. By planting maximum seedlings students can avail cash rewards. The department which is in the process of raising the seedling, is identifying schools and planning to introduce this scheme soon.

The reward will be presented to the best performing taluk, district and state levels. Each winner in a taluk will be awarded with cash amount of `10,000 as first prize, `5,000 as second prize and` 2,500 third prize, at district level. First prize will bring `25,000, `10,000 for second place, and `5000 for third place. State prizes includes `50,000 as first prize, `20,000 as second prize and 10,000 as third prizes.
