Mausam: An open letter to Pankaj Kapur
Mausam: An open letter to Pankaj Kapur
Ahead of his directorial debut 'Mausam', an open letter to Pankaj Kapur on what we expect from him.

Dear Sir,

It's been eight years and I am still not able to come out of the terror that 'Abbaji' had infused in my mind. I can clearly recall the dialogue between ACP Devsare and two of his subordinates about you in 'Maqbool'. The ACP had asked them about the man behind a brutal murder and they had replied 'Abbaji'. The ACP had then retorted back saying 'Maine rishta nahi naam poocha hai' (I have asked your name not your relationship with the man).

When 'Dus' released after a couple of years, I found you donning 'Jambhal'. This time you were nowhere close to 'Abbaji', still those rippling eyes were competent enough to penetrate my fellow moviegoers.

'The Blue Umbrella' portrayed you as a shady character 'Khatri'. You know sir, I really hated it when people abused 'Khatri' in the cinema hall, after stealing little girl's darling umbrella. I was dying to tell them, "Listen man, this is nothing. You can't judge this man's cruelty so easily."

There is one more thing sir. Vishal Bharadwaj has handled you really well. Give him another chance, even if as a villain, please.

Haunting glances in Rajkumar Santoshi's 'Halla Bol' had overshadowed your character in the film, but I don't know whether it's a good thing to overpower the actual character by the screen presence or not.

'Mussaddi Lal Tripathi' in 'Chala Mussaddi Office Office' did not come as surprise, as we had already seen you doing office rounds on TV.

Now, when you have decided to direct 'Mausam', all of my clan wishes you luck, but then you know how much costly the multiplex tickets are now. Therefore, we have some requests that you must fulfill. We are obliged enough in last so many years by your great acting skills and thus we are bound to watch your directorial debut. So, the issue of paying two-three green currency notes is out of the frame. Now, when we are willing to take a step forward, you should also come towards the negotiation table.

We rather I, because I feel the authority rests with me. Is there anything wrong in me taking the call, simply because I was always the biggest 'Pankaj Kapur' fan in my entire neighbourhood.

Sir, you must inculcate a bit of 'Ek Ruka Hua Faisla', 'Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron' and 'Mohan Joshi Hazir Ho' in 'Muasam'. It will work for me even if it shows in just one scene, making it three in the whole film.

No pun intended, I seriously want three scenes out of 80 something scenes of 'Mausam', to be modeled on the lines of these three hard hitting films.

Apart from it, 'Karamchand', 'Zabaan Sambhaal Ke', and 'Mohandas B.A.L.L.B', your TV serials, should have their imprints on comedy scenes.

Well, you can do away with 'Zabaan Sambhaal Ke'.

By the way, can we replace 'ZSK' with 'Neem Ka Ped'?

We have heard that 'Mausam' is the return of pure romance to the silver screen.

Thank you sir, we badly needed a pure romantic film.

Every now and then, directors claim to come up with so called pure romances.

Imagine our helplessness when people start calling 'Murder 2' and 'Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna' chaste and pious love stories.

Give a film that can take us down the memory lane, to those days, when crush meant failing in exam. When characters were far less technical in their movements. When innocence meant not opening a love letter for years due to the fear of rejection. When writing names on walls with broken bricks infuriated brothers.

We hope 'Mausam' will remain in our hearts for the sake of finding a love that does not throw his or her body at every possible opportunity.

Sir, we have been your followers since all these years. Now, it's your turn to gratify our needs.

Trust me, we will remain faithful to you even if 'Mausam' shatters our hopes, but it will be really nice if it meets our imagination. Who cares if the films are supposed to provide shocks via characterization. This time we just want to be nostalgic about same old pure world.

Best Wishes.

What's your reaction?
