Greater Noida: Kazakhstan riders continue to make merry on day two of the road races as they clinched two more medals - gold and silver - in the Hero Asian Cycling Championship here Thursday. The 22-year-old Danill Fominykh bagged gold for Kazakhstan in the men's Under-23 time trial event after compatriot Andrey Mizurov bagged silver in the men's elite competition on a windy morning here at the Buddh International Circuit.

The gold medal in the men's elite time trial went to Uzbekistan's Muradian Halmuratov who finished the 42.6km race in 51:51.111 secs, ahead of Mizurov (52:00.601 secs). Eugen Wacker of Kyrgyzstan (52:22.073 secs) won the bronze.

In the morning, though, the riders had difficulty steering through the ups and downs of the Formula One track due to a strong breeze blowing across the majestic racing arena. "It's difficult for riders to maintain a good speed in this strong wind. But, that's the beauty of the venue. Every rider had to adapt to the conditions," race commissioner Amar Singh said.

India's Gurmeet Singh finished 17th in the 22-rider race with a timing of 59:22.136 secs at an average speed of a little over 43 kilometres per hour. The Armyman, however, was satisfied with his performance. In the 28.4 km Under-23 trial event, Vietnam's Duc Tam Trinh (34:37.079 secs) won the silver, finishing behind Fominykh (34:27.855 secs). The bronze went to Jaeyeon IM of Korea (35:27.195 secs).

Suresh Bishnoi, the Indian cyclist in the race, finished 15th by clocking 39:16.362 secs while an Iran rider, Seyedmousa Mostafavi, backed out half way through the race after taking a wrong turn on the track.

The Indian coaches were pleased with the performance of their wards, who managed to better their speed Thursday. "Both our riders clocked over 43km per hour which is quite high. Their average speed was usually lower than 40. Our aim in the road races is to better our performance," an Indian coach said.

"The real test of our riders will be tomorrow in the distance races. We will be happy if our cyclists finish the race," he said. On Friday, Indian junior men and women will be in action in the 99.4 and 71-km pursuit, respectively.
