THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The first death anniversary of former Chief Minister and eminent Congress leader K Karunakaran was observed by various organisations in the capital on Friday. Chief Minister Oommen Chandy laid the foundation stone for the installation of a full-size statue of Karunakaran at Palayam.Later, speaking after inaugurating the commemoration programme organised by K Karunakaran Foundation at the VJT Hall, he remembered Karunakaran as a true leader who guided the state on the path of development. “The Nedumbassery International Airport and Goshree Islands development project are proof for his administrative wisdom,” Chandy said.He also said that Karunakaran had the befitting title, ‘leader’, for his success in taking his supporters into full confidence.“The Thrissur Town Hall will be named after Karunakaran,” he said.Speaker G Karthikeyan, who delivered the key-note address, observed that determination was the other word for Karunakaran.“Karunakaran was least considered about the criticism on his administrative decisions. He always stood for his conviction,” Karthikeyan said.Union Minister for State K C Venugopal said that the country had not seen a multi-faceted leader like Karunakaran. V M Sudheeran urged the government to name the Cochin International Airport after Karunakaran. Thalekkunnil Basheer presided over the function. Deputy Speaker N Sakthan, ministers P J Joseph, P K Kunhalikutty and V S Sivakumar, Peethambarakurup MP, former Meghalaya Governor M M Jacob, K Muraleedharan MLA and Padmaja Venugopal attended the function.Earlier on the day, prayers were held at Kalyani, the residence of Karunakaran at Nanthancode here. Various political leaders and Karunakaran’s family members attended the function.
