The deity worshipped at the Pazhavangaadi Sree Maha Ganapathy temple is Lord Ganesha.

In the lush green state of Kerala, two ancient temples hold a special place under the care of India’s esteemed Madras Regiment, known as the oldest in the Indian Army. These temples, the Pazhavangaadi Sree Maha Ganapathy Temple and the Sree Hanuman Swamy Temple are not just places of worship but also repositories of fascinating stories and traditions.

At the Pazhavangaadi Sree Maha Ganapathy Temple, devotees flock to pay homage to Lord Ganesha, the beloved elephant-headed deity. The temple reverberates with the chants of prayers during the auspicious festival of Vinayaka Chaturthi, celebrating Lord Ganesha’s birth. Alongside Lord Ganesha, worshippers also venerate God Ayyappan, Goddess Durga and Naga Deities.

A tale intertwined with history links the Pazhavangaadi temple to the Travancore army. In the ancient capital of Padmanabhapuram, a soldier discovered an idol of Lord Ganesha in a nearby river. The soldier and his comrades began worshipping the idol, fostering Lord Ganesh’s reverence in the region.

Adjacent to this temple stands the Sree Hanuman Swamy Temple, where devotees honour Lord Hanuman, known for his steadfast devotion to Lord Rama. The temple complex houses idols of five revered gods: Hanuman, Shiva, Vishnu, Ganesha and Nagarajas. Vada Mala, a dish made from urad dal, is the primary offering here, believed to appease Rahu Devata and mitigate Rahu Dosha.

Legend has it that Lord Hanuman subdued Rahu Devata in pursuit of the sun, earning a boon from Rahu Devata. As a result, offerings of urad dal to Lord Hanuman are believed to pacify Rahu Dosha.

Adorning the walls of the Sree Hanuman Swamy Temple are intricate paintings depicting the epic saga of Ramayana. A monumental sculpture of Lord Hanuman stands majestically within the temple, captivating worshippers with its grandeur.

These temples not only serve as spiritual sanctuaries but also as cultural landmarks, preserving centuries-old traditions and narratives. Under the stewardship of the Madras Regiment, they continue to enchant devotees and visitors alike, fostering a sense of reverence and wonder in the hearts of all who tread their sacred grounds.
