New Delhi: Alleging police harassment, son of a Muslim cleric on Wednesday tried to commit suicide in the Meston Road area of Kanpur, which led to tension in the industrial city.
Sayed Ilahi alias Faran, who is the son of Pesh Imam of Bari Idgah Kari Mohammed Ilahi, consumed a liquid mosquito repellent and was admitted to a private hospital where his condition was stated to be serious, police said.
Ilahi alleged that local police intelligence unit had been harassing his son about the 2001 communal riots in Kanpur.
Faran, an owner of a PCO-cum-photocopy shop, announced that he was committing suicide because he was fed up of being constantly harassed, claimed Ilahi.
While police say they are probing Faran's allegations, Kanpur District Magistrate Anurag Srivastava has ordered tight security arrangements to be made in Meston Road area of the city.
Shops in the area downed shutters soon after the incident.
