An idol and some gold and silver items were stolen from the Nagavalliamman Temple in Korattur here on Monday night.
The theft was discovered by the priest who came to open the temple doors on Tuesday morning.
A foot-tall panchaloha idol of Lord Muruga, a silver spear, a gold Thali worn by the main deity weighing about 2.5 sovereigns, silver utensils and other items used to perform the pooja were missing, police said.
A case has been registered with the Korattur police.

Three persons were arrested by Avadi Women Police during the wee hours of Tuesday on charges of issuing threats and breach of trust. Malathi, resident of New Colony in Thiruvallur, had lodged a complaint against Shankar, a resident of Ambattur, on charges of going back on his word of marriage. Shankar and his relatives, Sasikumar and Devi, threatened the complainant of dire consequences if she pressed for marriage, police said.
27-year-old Mowed Down by Lorry A 27-year-old man died after being mowed down by a tipper lorry on the 3rd Main Road in Ambattur Industrial Estate here on Monday.
Umeshkumar (27), a resident of Heavy Vehicles Factory in Avadi, was riding his two-wheeler when the accident occured.
A case was registered and lorry driver Sakthivel was picked up by the Poonamallee Traffic Investigation Police.
