Srinagar: Blaming the Centre for the deteriorating situation in Jammu and Kashmir, the moderate faction of the Hurriyat Conference on Tuesday said the government and the security forces were "creating hurdles" in the dialogue process aimed at resolving the Kashmir issue.
"The government and forces are continuously taking steps to further worsen the situation so (that) hurdles are created in the ongoing dialogue process," said a statement issued by the Hurriyat faction headed by Mirwaiz Umer Farooq.
The Hurriyat had on Tuesday called for a strike in the Kashmir Valley to protest the alleged desecration of a mosque and the Quran by security forces.
It also protested the subsequent firing on protesters that left two persons dead and many others injured over the past two days.
"We feel the Indian government has not learnt lessons from history. It continues to pursue old tactics to crush the ongoing struggle," the statement said.
It criticised police action on Hurriyat activists who tried to stage a protest march against "state terrorism and human rights violations".
The police action "exposed the claims of zero tolerance" of human rights abuses by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, the statement said.
Donning black clothes and carrying black banners, the slogan-shouting Hurriyat activists came out from its headquarters at Rajbagh this afternoon and tried to stage the march.
However, they were stopped by police and 20 of them were taken into preventive custody after a baton-charge.
The statement said many of senior Hurriyat activists including Mohammad Altaf Dar, Shahid-ul-Islam and Farooq Ahmad Sodagar were injured in the police action.
