Huge haul of spirit in Tiruvalla

The Pulikeezhu police seized 4,725 litres of illicit spirit which was stored in 135 cans from Chathankery near here on Thursday night. Pulikeezhu SI Byju K Jose carried out a raid following a tip-off about the storage of illicit spirit here.

When the police reached Chathankery bridge, two people were unloading cans containing spirit from a mini lorry. On seeing the police, the lorry driver fled from the spot. Pramod, 34, of Anaprampal, Thalavadi near here, who was unloading the spirit was arrested. The spirit cans were arranged between sacks containing salt packets.

Tiruvalla DySP Sabu P Idikula said that according to the goods vehicles’ records at the Aryankavu check post the lorry entred the state on August 21. “Around 100 sacks of salt were used to hide the spirit cans. The market price of the seized spirit is more than `10 lakh. The culprits planned to sell the spirit for `28 lakh, after diluting it,” he said.

During interrogation, Pramod revealed that the illicit spirit was unloaded in Chathankery for Thalavadi natives Prakash and Shibu. “The owner of the seized lorry Perumbavoor native Shashankan had purchased the lorry only a few months ago and it has only a temporary permit. It is suspected that he purchased the lorry for the transportation of illicit spirit,” Tiruvalla CI Binu Varghese said.

Pulikeezhu police had seized 1,200 litres of illicit liquor from Thevery near Parumala three months ago. Police officials said that the illicit spirit was brought to be sold during the Onam.
