The Mysore Dasara procession is more than 400 years old. It is one of the oldest annual events in the World. The idol of the presiding deity of Mysore, Goddess Chamundeshwari is taken in procession (Jamboo Savari) in the Golden Howdah on the day of Vijaya Dashami, every year. The 750 kg Howdah is mounted on the lead royal elephant with the statue of the goddess. But, the Karnataka High Court feels that the Howdah is too heavy for the poor elephant. While disposing a case related to elephant conservation, the High Court advised the Karnataka government to use a lighter Howdah instead of centuries old heavy Howdah. However the court refused to give any instructions to the government on the grounds that it can't intervene in such matters. It is now up to the state government to deal with this elephantine problem.

The state Congress leaders and some local functionaries of the DMK are confident of yet another Congress-DMK alliance before the next Lok Sabha polls. "Today, in Tamil Nadu, both the Congress and the DMK are almost in the same position. While the DMDK, which has consolidated anti-Dravidian forces to certain extent, has succeeded in establishing itself as a force to reckon with, the Congress could not do it because it never capitalize the anti-Dravidian sentiments in the State," said a party leader. There is also a talk of Congress aligning with actor turned politician Vijayakanth's DMDK. AICC vice president had greeted Vijayakanth on his birth day.
