ATHANI: Five people were burnt alive in a fire that broke out in a multi-storeyed building in Athani town in the wee hours of Wednesday.
The fire is said to have been caused due to an electric short circuit on the ground floor of Swami Collection, a cloth store at 4 am. The charred bodies of cloth store owner Mrityunjay Hiremath (42), his wife Laxmi Hiremath (40), employees of the showroom Channabasu Baichal (28), Girish Nirwanimath (26) and Ajit were found in the afternoon.

However, it is believed that two more employees were inside the showroom when the fire occurred.

A 200litre petrol generator and two gas cylinders that were stored in the building also exploded in the fire.

It took nearly 10 hours to bring the fire under control.
