TIRUPATI: A student belonging to a Scheduled Tribe hanged himself in his hostel room at the Sri Venkateshwara University (SVU) engineering college in the small hours of Thursday, apparently dejected that his love for a Brahmin girl was opposed by her family.Twenty-three-year-old B Varun Dev, an M. Tech (chemical engineering) final- year student, is a native of Guntur, son of a realtor, Parvati Rao.According to sources, Varun fell in love with a classmate during his days as a B Tech student at Vigyan Engineering College, Guntur. Both of them joined SVU College of Engineering later. Upon coming to know of their affair, the girl’s parents decided to marry her off to a person of their choice. Varun went into depression when he came to know of this a month ago."He called his brother Manoj Kumar and poured out his woes. Manoj decided to visit Varun to counsel him and asked his brother to receive him at the bus station on Wednesday,’’ sources said. However, Varun failed to turn up. Suspecting something wrong, Manoj rushed to the hostel and found his brother’s room bolted from the inside. With the help of others in the hostel, he forced open the door and found the body of Varun hanging from the ceiling.Police were alerted. The incident happened at around 1.30 pm. Varun had hanged himself with a plastic rope. He left behind a suicide note in which he repeatedly apologised to his parents and the girl he loved. After conducting the inquest and autopsy, the body was handed over to his family.
