New Delhi: Tamil Nadu government and a team of technical experts on Saturday inspected the Mullaperiyar dam in Kerala to check its strength.
R K Sharma, former director general of National Water Development Agency, heading the five-member team, said that they studied the technology used for strengthening the dam few years ago.
“They assessed the quality of the strengthening work, besides the dam's original and present appearance,” PTI quoted him as saying.
The team also visited the main dam, baby dam, shutters, seepage factors and the tunnel.
Sharma also said that the team's technical report would be submitted to the Tamil Nadu Government and if the Centre asked for it, a copy would be forwarded.
The team included two experts from Uttar Pradesh and one each form Orissa and Andhra Pradesh. Chief Engineer (Madurai Zone) Vijayakumar accompanied them.
However, a group of nearly 100 BJP workers shouted slogans against the team and held a demonstration on the site.
The workers said that a new dam should be constructed in place of the more than a century old lime and surkhi structure.
The Mullaperiyar dam situated in Idukki district of Kerala is embroiled in a controversy as Tamil Nadu wanted to raise the water level in the dam going by a Supreme Court verdict.
