Dubai: An Indian couple in Saudi Arabia has been detained in connection with the murder of a maid, leaving their eighteen-month-old twins in dire straits.
On July 7, Saudi police had detained Roy Joseph and his wife Biji, employees at the Saudi Binladin Group and the King Khaled Hospital respectively, after their maid was found dead under mysterious circumstances.
The twins, currently surviving on milk formula and baby feeds under the care of friends of their parents are sick and crying to see their mother, according to a report in Arab News.
A group of friends and colleagues of the Indian couple have sought intervention of the National Society for Human Rights and submitted a written appeal seeking the mother's release for the sake of the children, John Thomas, a family friend was quoted by the newspaper.
"The NSHR officials have assured us that they will pursue the case and talk to the higher Saudi authorities, but nothing has come so far," he said.
When asked about the case charge d'affaires at the Nepalese Embassy, Prakash Kumar Suvedi, said, they were in the process of trying to establish the housemaid's identity.
An Indian Embassy spokesman said the mission was following up the case.
However, the embassy says it has been denied access to the couple so far.
According to relatives, the maid had run away from the Indian couple's house on July 7 with a bunch of keys and a mobile phone.
