Don't harass couples in public places: Mumbai police chief's directive to his force
On August 6, the Malwani police had raided hotels in the Madh, Aksa and Danapani areas and booked nearly 40 couples for indecent behaviour in public.

Days after the Mumbai Police came under fire for raids at hotels in the city, Mumbai police chief Rakesh Maria has issued directions to policemen not to harass couples in public places. He said that the police doesn't have the right to intrude into a citizens privacy or infringe on individual freedom.

Issuing a circular, Maria said, "It has been observed that there have been instances of Mumbai police interfering in the private space of individuals. The police force should not harass couples in malls, beaches, public places or hotel rooms. The police should not comment on or advise citizens on what to wear. Police doesn't have the right to intrude into a citizens privacy or infringe on individual freedom.

On August 6, the Malwani police had raided hotels in the Madh, Aksa and Danapani areas and booked nearly 40 couples for indecent behaviour in public.

State Human Rights Commission had initiated a probe the raids and had sought a report from the Rakesh Maria on the matter. Maria too had ordered a probe into the incident.
