DDA Vice-chairman said such places get encroached upon when lying vacant so this would also keep such elements away.

New Delhi: The vacant land plots of DDA meant for various projects but lying unused at present, would now be turned into playfields for underpriviliged children.

The urban body has already identified two such places in south Delhi. "We have professional sporting amenities but we also want to extend sports facilities to the poorest of poor in Delhi, and so it has been decided to utilise vacant land, meant for various projects but lying unused at present as playfields," DDA Vice-Chairman Arun Goel said on Thursday.

"We will also try to arrange sporting goods and consumables for them, like volleyball net, football and other stuff " he said, adding, "Coaches for various sports would be arranged for providing training in various sports disciplines and security personnel would be deployed."

He said such places get encroached upon when lying vacant so this would also keep such elements away. A senior DDA official, speaking to reporters at the DDA headquarters here, said, "We have identified two plots of 20 acre each so far, in Neb Serai and Maidangarhi. And, are looking at 2-3 sites in east Delhi as well".

On a question regarding FIFA Under-17 World Cup in 2017, the official said, "J L Nehru Stadium has been picked up as the venue in Delhi. Also, Commonwealth Football Ground has been selected as the training venue for which its turf is to be upgraded next year."
