In a spine-chilling incident, a final year BA student sneaked a two-feet machete into his class and hacked a boy after his attempt to attack a girl, who had spurned his amorous proposal, was thwarted by other students in the room at the Periyar Government Arts College in Cuddalore on Tuesday.
The attack, which send shock waves across the campus and led to the authorities declaring a holiday for the college till Friday, happened when a lecturer was filling up examination forms of History major students in the classroom. Santhanadeven, who walked into the class with the machete wrapped in cloth, pulled it out suddenly and asked the lecturer to leave the room. When he lunged towards the girl, his other classmates stopped him. But he turned his ire towards one of the boys, Prasanth, who was protecting the girl, and hacked him.
Prasanth, who is from Nellikuppam, has been admitted to the Cuddalore Government Hospital with deep cut injuries.
While the other students managed to grab the machete, Santhanadeven managed to escape.
The Devanampattinam police, led by inspector Paul Sudahar, rushed to the spot, seized the weapon and are on the lookout for Santhanadeven, a native of Cuddalore.
The classmates said that Santhanadeven was furious as the girl not only failed to reciprocate his love but was also close to some other students of the class.
When the students went for an excursion to Thanjavur a few days back Santhanadeven had threatened her for moving with her group of friends.
Since she ignored him, he perhaps decided to teach her a lesson in public and brought the machete to college, the classmates said and added: “Since it was covered with cloth, we thought that it was a cricket bat or a hockey stick.”
