The fencing of the open space opposite the Sanjeevaiah Park on the Necklace Road by the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has raised the hackles of civil society groups such as the Forum for a Better (FBH) Hyderabad and Save Our Urban Lankes (SOUL) who claimed that it was illegal.
“We have interim orders from the Supreme Court and the High Court. Despite that the GHMC has fenced it and intends to use it to park vehicles,” said P Ramakrishna, convenor, SOUL.
The two-acre open land, where debris is also being dumped, has become the latest bone of contention between the civic body and the NGOs.
“When I went to the GHMC, the Commissioner just shooed us away,” alleged Jasveen Jairath, founder-member, SOUL, at an interaction with the media here Sunday.
Omim Debara from FBH also claimed that the GHMC had refused to provide them information about the land.
“After a lot of effort, we came to know that the plot is going to be used as a parking space, which is still a gross violation of court orders,” explained Debara.
However, when contacted, GHMC Commissioner MT Krishna Babu denied violating court orders.
“In fact, we have cleared that place of encroachments and we have protected that entire area from further encroachments.
Hence, the fencing,” he explained.
About the open space being turned into a parking lot, he clarified that the parking space at Khairatabad was getting congested, and that was why they had decided to use that open space to park GHMC vehicles at night.
“There were encroachments before, and we cleared them. Now we just want to make sure that nothing comes up again,” asserted the Commissioner.
The other side of the area, opposite KIMS Hospital on the Ministers’ road, which is owned by the HMDA, has also become controversial with several questioning the civic body’s objectives.
“HMDA says it will create an ecological park. But they themselves are dumping sand and are dirtying that area. How can an ecological park come up?” questioned Jairath.
Apart from that, she pointed out that nearly four acres of land had been allocated for shifting of Dr. Car Park, a second-hand car showroom, to an open piece of land beside the two acres of open space opposite the Sanjeevaiah Park.
“Dr.Car Park was supposed to be shifted as there was a proposal to build a YSR memorial in its place. But we have a stay order on that too, as it comes under Hussainsagar lake,” mentioned Jasveen.
HMDA Executive Engineer, Majid Shareef, gave a completely different picture.
“Out of the 40 acres of land opposite KIMS, 20 will be used to build an eco park, and there will be no permanent structures on it,” he confirmed and said the HMDA was in fact restoring the lake near KIMS Hospital and was in the process of desilting the same.
About SOUL’s claim that the upcoming Paradise Hotel beside the Imax theater was in the Full Tank Level (FTL) area of Hussainsagar, Shareef rubbished it.
“If it is in FTL, how is Imax there?” questioned Shareef, who is also a part of the Hussainsagar lake improvement project.
