New Delhi: The statement by Home Minister P Chidambaram on the ongoing offensive in Sri Lanka against the Tamil Tigers has had immediate reactions from Colombo as well as within India.

Chidamabaram had said that India was able to persuade Sri Lanka to stop hostilities against the Tamil Tigers for 48 hours and it was regrettable that the Tigers did not respond to the ceasefire call.

"We were able to prevail on the Sri Lankan government and get them to pause for 48 hours. It was disappointing that there was no response from LTTE. Sri Lanka should end hostilities and simultaneously LTTE should lay down their arms," he said.

Sri Lanka's envoy to India reacted immediately saying that no pressure has been put by any country in the world and that that LTTE was a terror organisation for whom there should be no sympathy.

Sri Lankan High Commissioner Romesh Jayesinghe meanwhile, told CNN-IBN, "No country in the world has asked Sri Lanka to end the military offensive against LTTE. The world has no sympathy for terrorists."
