CHENNAI: Defending the hike in bus fare, Transport Minister V Senthil Balaji on Tuesday said fares here were still the lowest in the country. Replying to a remark of CPI(M) member K Balabarathi in the State assembly that the common man was burdened by the hike, Balaji said, “It is 42 paise a km, whereas in states like Kerala the fare in ordinary services was 55 paise a km as early as 2008 itself during the CPM regime, when the cost of diesel was Rs 36.50 a litre,” he said. Accusing the DMK regime of gross mismanagement of transport corporations, he said buses were even pledged.Health Minister VS Vijay said the State was bound to implement the order of the courts when Balabarathi wanted the government to hold talks with agitating nursing students. Private nursing students went to  court seeking jobs in State sector and won the case.  The nurses will be recruited through the Medical Services Recruitment Board. When Balabarathi referred to an alleged instance of a Dalit civic chief  not being allowed to sit in a chair in Basuvapatti village on R-Day, Local Administration Minister KP Munusamy said  the Collector had been advised to take action.
