CHENNAI: This is the woman who adorns the popular, eponymous Italian fashion house – Missoni, which is feted everywhere for its bold Kaleidoscopic designs and vibrant colours. Angela Missoni, the Italian designer, was in India last week- after a two decade gap- to inaugurate the 14th  annual conference of the International Foundation of Technology Institutes (IFFTI)  in Jaipur. Missoni loves colours and it’s evident from her Spring/Summer 2012 collection. Known for signature striped and zigzag knits whose colourful patterns evoke an optimistic, haute hippie lifestyle, Missoni suggests floral-printed dresses, flowing gowns, fringe and frills for this season. “The summer girl is happy and dancing all night and so are the dresses, dancing with her. Cobalt blue, yellow and orange and a lot of movement, but still sexy, with a lightness and transparency in the clothes are something that I would suggest for Indian summer too,” she says. “This summer, the colours are not tacky, but hues of blue – from ink and aqua to royal and cerulean, bright yellow, magenta, lime, green and tangerine,” she adds. An insistence on retaining her sense of self has been crucial to Angela’s evolution as a designer, as she always wanted to be a jewellery designer. Her Spring/Summer 2012 is proof that Missoni loves to explore her accessories. “Jewellery is my forte. And for Indian ladies, I would suggest ‘keep it happy’. Summer accessories are fun. The plexi (acrylic plastic) high heels and sandals adorned with bright plastic flowers dominate this season. Also, the jungle prints and fabulous monkey-charm earrings and bags ruffled and frilled just like the clothes can make a style statement.”When Angela Missoni tells us that if given an opportunity, she will experiment with the Indian sari using knits, it is surprising to note that the sari has made a mark, again, in the international market. Missoni, who is smitten by the six-yard drape, hopes to make the sari a global garment. “There can be no one who doesn’t love to wear a sari. Since we work with a lot of knits and prints, I hope to design knitted sari which will be ready-to-wear and suit any culture.”Coming to think of her brand’s launch in India, Angela puts a hold on it. For, she appreciates the quality and the pace of growth and sophistication of the design sector in India, but is not planning to launch Missoni in India. In person, Angela has a charm which is as bold and bright as her clothes. Talking about her views on Indian fashion, the designer says, “There is a lot of skill in India, and such design schools pave way to emerging designers. The colours and the fabric quality is same as we get in Italy, but our silhouettes are different, thanks to the varied climatic changes,” she smiles.
