New Delhi: A bomb scare following the recovery of two iron devices from near a pond created panic in the Kandwa area in Varanasi on Sunday.

Labourers working near the Karmadeshwar Mahadev pond in the Kandwa locality on the outskirts of Varanasi spotted a jar containing devices lying near the pond, Sub-inspector in charge of Chittaipur police outpost under Lanka police station Kumud Shekhar Singh said in Varanasi.

The bomb detection and disposal squad posted in the 36th PAC Batallion was swiftly pressed into service after the labourers reported the matter apprehending explosive devices kept in the jar and took the jar to the police post.

The explosive experts after thorough check up found that the jar did not contain any explosive and the iron devices were only spare parts of a truck or a car, said Singh.

On March 7 last year, two explosions occurred in quick succession at the Sankatmochan shrine and the cantonment railway station, killing 20 people and injuring over 50.

The worst hit was the railway station where 14 people were killed and 30 injured.

The other blast at the famous Sankatmochan temple occurred when it was teeming with devotees, killing six persons and injuring 25 others.
