With Cabinet approving signing of the UN Convention against Corruption, India can now expect more transparency in corruption probes.

New Delhi: The Union Cabinet on Thursday approved signing of United Nations Convention against Corruption. The convention is to provide international cooperation and mutual legal assistance in investigation of cases of corruption and recovery of assets.

The Cabinet has also initiated the enactment of legislations by the Ministries concerned for ratification of the Convention, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi said after the Cabinet meeting.

"India would project its objective of zero tolerace against corruption internationally, which would promote interational relations and trade development," Information and Broadcasting Minister P R Dasmunsi told reporters after the Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

The Convention, which has been signed by 118 countries including neighbouring Pakistan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Maldives and China, would provide for international cooperation and mutual legal assistance in investigation of cases of corruption and recovery of assets.

Countries like the US, Russia, UK, France, Germany, Japan, South Africa and Brazil, have also signed the agreement and as many as 19 have ratified it, he said.

Dasmunsi said the Convention was opened to all countries for signature from December 2003 and is open till Friday.
