THIRUVANATHAPURAM: Dr K Ampady, Head of the Regional News Division (RND), Doordarshan, has bagged the Doordarshan National Award for heading the RND of Doordarshan, Thiruvananthapuram, which has been adjudged the Best RND of the country by the National Broadcaster. The award, in recognition for the overall restructuring of the RND and the qualitative and quantitative upgradation of the News and Current Affairs programmes in DD News Malayalam, was presented to Ampady by Union Minister for Information & Broadcasting Ambika Soni at a function held in New Delhi on Wednesday. Ampady, a 2002 batch civil service officer belonging to the Indian Information Service, joined Doordarshan, Thiruvananthapuram in 2007. In a span of four years since then, DD News Malayalam has seen almost three times increase in news and current affairs content. RND, Doordarshan, Thiruvananthapuram, also became the first fully-automated RND of the country and the commercial revenue from News and Current Affairs programmes almost doubled. Doordarshan has now hourly news bulletins, daily popular current affairs discussion show ‘Varthakalkku Pinnil’, one-to-one interview programme ‘Thuranna Manasode’ and business magazine ‘Business Matters’. During this period, DD News Malayalam also empanelled its representatives throughout the State and Lakshadweep, enabled them with high technology gadgets for up-to-date visual transfer and empanelled news anchors, correspondents and post-production assistants. ENPS automation system was put in place, with high quality digital reception, editing and transmission facilities. Ampady has also been the recipient of the Adoor Bhasi Award and Rajiv Gandhi Award earlier this year for the restructuring of DD News Malayalam.
