SALEM: The bail plea of former DMK minister Veerapandi Arumugam, who was arrested and remanded to custody in a fresh land grab case, was dismissed by the Fourth Judicial Magistrate Court here on Monday. Narayanan, counsel for Veerapandi Arumugam, moved a bail petition citing age and ill-health as high grounds for an early release. The petition came up for hearing on Monday. On the face of strong objections from the prosecution side, magistrate Sri Vidya dismissed the petition. The magistrate’s observations are yet to be known. However, lawyers of Veerpandi Arumugam hinted that the rejection was based on strong objections from the prosecution which ran into four pages. One of the major objections cited by prosecution is that the investigation of the case in which the ex-minister was arrested is not yet complete.Assistant public rrosecutor Salim could not be contacted. Veerapandi Arumugam’s lawyer A Moorthy told Express that only after obtaining the bail dismissal order the next course of action could be planned. Either the district court or the Madras High Court could be moved for a fresh bail plea, he said. A modest crowd of DMK’s first line district level leaders and party lawyers were present in the court complex. Depressed over the dismissal of the bail, they hung around the court to chart out their next course of action to get their leader released.
