CHENNAI: DMK patriarch M Karunanidhi on Saturday accused the AIADMK government of engineering the arrest of former Fisheries Minister K P P Samy in a murder case, to ensure the local strongman would not be able to work for the DMK’s victory in the coming local body elections.“This is a plot aimed at preventing him from working to ensure the DMK’s victory. They have filed a false case against him, that too for a crime that they are alleged to have been committed many years ago,” said Karunanidhi.His comments shortly after the former minister’s arrest from his residence in Thiruvottriyur, for his alleged involvement in the murder of a fisherman in 2006. Samy’s brother, K P Shankar, had recently surrendered to the police in the same case, after absconding since before the recent Assembly election.Karunanidhi remained tightlipped about the DMK’s plans for the coming local body elections. He refused to offer any substantial comment on what would happen now that all the parties were fighting the polls on their own strengths, or on when the DMK would start campaigning.Karunanidhi also played down a recent meeting between Congress president Sonia Gandhi and DMK parliamentary party leader T R Baalu, which had set tongues wagging over the truck between the two parties. “As an ally and the leader of a friendly party, I had conveyed my regards to Sonia Gandhi when she was unwell and when she went to the US for surgery. As a Tamilian, as per Tamil culture, I had sent T R Baalu to enquire about her health,” said Karunanidhi.
